April 3, 2014 For Immediate Release:
Board Voice has collaborated with a number of Central Okanagan organizations to bring boards together to disucss issues of concern in the Region. In particular, the upcoming Board Impact Forum will explore the Influence and Issues of Volunteer Governance
Anyone on a board or thinking of joining a board is encouraged to attend the first ever Board Impact Forum: The Influence and The Issues on Monday, April 14th at 4:00 pm at the Rotary Centre for the Arts.
The Central Okanagan is home to 364 volunteer organizations and every one of these organizations has a legal obligation to have a team of committed volunteers (a.k.a. Board Directors) that lends their expertise, time and resources to steer that organization. With an incredibly diverse set of community leaders providing volunteer governance, sustainability and influence for these organizations, these organizations in turn make a tremendous
impact to the lives and well-being of people in our region. Running the gamut from arts and recreation to social and health services and everything in between, these ‘social-profit’ organizations are in all sectors of the economy and play a critical part in the overall health and viability of our communities
At times the commitment of Board Directors is overlooked when talking about volunteerism and yet, the reality is, each organization has a legal responsibility to have a board, and these directors do voluntarily take on additional risk and demands on their time and resources to fulfill that responsibility. Kelowna Community Resources in partnership with Central Okanagan Board Voice, Central Okanagan Foundation and the City of Kelowna recognized the need to celebrate and acknowledge the value of volunteer boards and its directors and
therefore created this event to do just that.
Knowing that there are generally speaking three types of volunteers (the knowledge-seeker, the connector and the socialiser) the Board Impact Forum meets the needs of all three. A panel discussion on the Influence and Issues facing boards will offer valuable information, possible solutions and new perspectives and a networking reception with dessert and entertainment allows for both fun and connecting.
Our panel of speakers represent thousands of hours at the board room table in all sectors:
Dr. Sharon McCoubrey, UBCO – Moderator
Ken Gauthier, Urban Systems
Cam Kourany, CBRE
Alison Moscrop, Colin & Lois Pritchard Foundation
Lynn Malinsky, Board Voice
Laura Thurnheer, Okanagan School of Business, OC
