On September 1, the benefit rates for people with disabilities will increase by a paltry $77 per month. However, as Paul Willocks argues in The Tyee, this increase would not even keep up with inflation. When you add in the fact that persons with disabilities will now have to pay $52 a month for bus pass that used to cost them $45 per year, the increase is so meagre that it will likely make no difference except that people will forgo their buss passes so they can eat. Given that BC has the 5th highest child poverty rate in the province, the province missed a great opportunity to lift some of those families a little further out of property.
